SAN SILVESTRE VALLECANA 2011.
Every year on the afternoon of the 31st of December Madrid celebrates its traditional race that has become increasingly popular with more and more participants..
In this prestigious competition to celebrate the last day of the year a sea of 35,000 runners will pass through the streets of the city. The competition perfectly combines a very high sporting level and a huge popular participation.
The San Silvestre Vallecana consists of two different competitions: a popular one in which it is only necessary to be over the age of 16, and a professional one in which men must have a personal time of less than 38 minutes and women less than 45 from a previous 10km race.
The popular competition celebrates its 34th edition this year and is characterized by its festive tone. It begins at 17:30h and the start off is organized in groups to avoid congestion and so that the race is as relaxed as possible and each runner can go at their own pace.
The race will pass through touristic locations such as the Puerta de Alcalá, Cibeles and the Paseo del Arte, and begins in the financial centre of the city, from Concha Espina street by the Paseo de la Castellana.
The route is very favourable for the runners as eight of its ten kilometres gently decline, however runners have to preserve their strength for the final two kilometres where they will encounter a adverse incline.
