THE AREA SURROUNDING THE SOL AURORA APARTMENT.
The Sol apartments are located in the heart of Madrid's historic centre on the Calle de la Cruz which is marked as the western border of the neighbourhood known as the "Barrio de las Letras" or in English, the Literary Neighbourhood. This historic location will give you quick and easy access by foot to many of the most visited sites in Madrid, a huge amount of places to eat and drink, shopping districts, and also easy communication by public transport wherever you need to get to in Madrid.
The neighbourhood owes its name to the intense literary activity that was carried out there throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. Some of the most important writers of the so called "Golden Age" of Spanish literature resided here including Lope de Vega and Quevedo, and it was on the Calle Atocha of this neighbourhood that the original edition of Don Quijote was printed in 1604.
The majority of the current buildings in the neighbourhood were built after the Golden Age at the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century, however a few buildings remain, notably the house-museum of Lope de Vega, the Saint Ildefonso Convent where Miguel de Cervantes is buried, and the church of San Sebastián.
Just some of the important sites that you can reach simply by taking a short stroll from your Sol apartment are the Puerta del Sol (two minutes' walk), the Plaza Mayor (five minutes' walk), the Prado museum (twelve minutes' walk), the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral (twelve minutes' walk), and many more besides.
Should shopping be on your agenda you could hardly be better placed as the Calle Preciados lies at just a four minute walk away across the Puerta del Sol, and slightly further afield is the Calle Fuencarral area at twenty minutes' walk.
To take advantage of your fully equipped kitchen it would be well worth a visit to the San Miguel Market in San Miguel Square at seven minutes walk (Plaza de San Miguel) where you will encounter a marvellous fresh produce market to stock up your kitchen and which features a beautiful wrought iron structure that was erected in 1916.
To get away from the hustle and bustle of the capital or to take a break from sightseeing, look no further than the famous and expansive Retiro Park which lies just a fifteen minute walk from your Sol apartment and where you can indulge in relaxing strolls in the shade of the tall trees and take in the views of impressive gardens.
For going out to eat and drink your very own neighbourhood offers you a great variety and number of restaurants, cafés and bars in the streets surrounding your apartment, especially around the Calle de las Huertas (five minutes' walk) and the Plaza de Santa Ana (three minutes' walk).
